Idaho National Laboratory’s (INL) Nuclear Remote Systems group is seeking forward-thinking professionals interested in exploring a career as a NRAD Cognizant System Engineer.

Responsibilities Include:

The assigned Neutron Radiography Reactor (NRAD) Cognizant System Engineer is responsible for systems, structures, and components (SSC’s) related to NRAD. In this role the System Engineer works independently, with the Applied Engineering Department personnel, and with NRAD Operations staff to apply engineering knowledge, practice, and techniques in support of assignments and be responsible to ensure continued operational readiness of reactor systems and equipment. Technical understanding of safety analysis report, technical safety requirements, system design requirements, system performance criteria, physical configuration, operation, testing, training, and maintenance of assigned systems and components is required.

A Cognizant System Engineer performs this role as follows:

  • Ensure continued operational readiness of assigned safety systems
  • Interacts with technical networks inside the Laboratory. Influences program engineering standards and procedures and division strategies and direction
  • Proactively identifies, promotes, and develops plans for new program initiatives
  • Performs complex assignments given general expectation and guidelines
  • Selects and develops technical approach to assignments
  • Directs technical projects that may involve multidisciplinary activities
  • Resolves or approves engineering approach for solving problems and meeting client needs
  • Engineer on projects or tasks. Assignments are broad in nature, usually requiring originality and ingenuity. Decisions or recommendations may impact programmatic objectives
  • May mentors and supports peers and junior staff in technical growth

Minimum Requirements:

  • ABET accredited bachelor’s degree in engineering (nuclear, mechanical, electrical, or related field) and 2-5 years’ experience or advanced degree and 1-3 years relevant experience
  • Must qualify INL Cognizant System Engineer
  • Must qualify Rad Worker 2
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy "L" / "Q" clearance, which requires US Citizenship
